Happy New Year...

2012 is just around the corner...

Very aptly, Emma and I just saw the movie New Year's Eve before I sat down to write this post to wish you all an amazingly Happy New Year. There are so many clichés that get uttered this time of year. People get distracted by them and we get confused as to whether we should reflect on the year that has passed or start planning for or thinking about the year ahead. Well, obviously you should do both. The thing is, this is the time of year that forces you to this. And that is an opportunity no one should waste.

One of the characters in the movie gives a very inspirational speech about how we should reflect on the year that has passed, think about how we've lived our lives and how we should treat people, but the one thing that I clearly remember, is where she mentioned that you should reflect on the chances you took as well as the opportunities that you closed yourself off from. This to me is the most important, because it is something you can change en embrace in the coming year.

I pretty much just have one big resolution this coming year.

To do what I love and makes me happy. Go places, see places, meet people, be kind to them, do something or do everything...as long as it adds happiness and love to my life and the people around me.

So in between all the sparkles, fireworks, glitter, champagne, countdowns, parties, sequins and shouts of Happy New Year and hopefully a kiss at midnight...decide what you love and what makes you happy!

Have an amazing and blessed 2012.

Rachel

So are you to me... #43

FALL IN LOVE, FIND THE PERFECT WEDDING DRESS, HAVE MY DAD WALK ME DOWN THE ISLE, WEAR SOMETHING OLD, NEW, BORROWED AND BLUE AND GET MARRIED

She was filled with a strange wild unfamiliar happiness, and knew that this was love. Twice in her life she had mistaken something else for it. It’s like seeing somebody in the street who you think is a friend, you whistle and wave and run after him, but it is not only not the friend, but not even very like him. A few minutes later the real friend appears in view, and then you can’t imagine how you ever mistook that other person for him.
-Nancy Mitford (The Pursuit of Love)

I loved with a love that was more than love.
-Edgar Allan Poe

So this post starts off with a warning. This one is ALL about falling in love and getting married. Yes, I’m going there. Feel free to close your browser RIGHT NOW...and maybe switch off the computer as well...or just skip to #44 (hehe, you will have to wait a couple of days).

Those that know me will be utterly blown away and surprised by this post. To explain...

I am not a girly girl. I would rather kick your ass than be thought of as weak or soppy. I usually end up being ‘one of the boys’ at parties. So, for blog intents and purposes, I have decided to tap into my inner girl. All things love, dress, cake and wedding related to follow. Please don’t judge. And we are never to speak of this again...until you get a wedding invite...which I have already designed in my head of course...I am nothing if not obsessive compulsive, thorough and a perfectionist...

Continue reading at own risk. Take comfort in the fact that I am only giving you a glimpse of the crazy...

So here is a very heartfelt confession: yes, I have thought about finding that one special person...that one person that just gets everything about you. I say think, but I really mean obsessed and let’s be honest, what woman hasn't? This is a safe space, you can admit it (yes, you, Emma). And yes, I have thought about what my wedding could/would be like... I'm a girl, hello, it happens :). I have thought about the ring, the dress, the venue, cake, music and decorations, but all of that will be secondary to holding (I say holding, but I mean clinging to) my dad’s hand as he walks me down the aisle and I marry the man I love...

A soulmate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we’re pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we’re safe in our own paradise….When we’re two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we've found the right person. Our soulmate is the one who makes life come to life.
-Richard Bac

I just sort of feel like drugs when I'm with you. Not that I do drugs, unless you do drugs, in which case I do drugs all the time, every drug. Yeah, I don't know. Just when I'm with you things sort of seem a little brighter.
-Scott Pilgrim vs The World

As I mentioned before, my parents will be married for 32 years in a couple of weeks...they still hold hands, they still kiss each other hello and goodbye (even if my Mom is just quickly making a run to the grocery store) (can I get a collective *sigh*), they make out in the kitchen (can I get a collective *eeew*) and my Dad still opens the car door for my Mom when they go somewhere (some of the funniest memories are of my Mom staying seated in the car when my Dad got distracted by something or someone before he could open the door)...so where the heck do I find someone to live up to THAT and to treat me in this way :)?

Ok, now you can judge :).

Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be!
-Robert Browning

You Glue

There are

and will be

times

that my skin
threatens
rebellion and wishes
to shake off.
There will be
and
have been times
my heart wishes
to follow my
breath
and escape
out my throat.
When I
tremble
and the earthquake
in my body
shuts tight
these eyes,
You are
and always
have been
the glue
that holds me
together.

-Tyler Knott Gregson

Postcards From Italy

The times we had

Oh, when the wind would blow with rain and snow

Were not all bad

We put our feet just where they had, had to go

Never to go

The shattered soul
Following close but nearly twice as slow
In my good times
There were always golden rocks to throw
at those who admit defeat too late
Those were our times, those were our times

And I will love to see that day
That day is mine
When she will marry me outside with the willow trees
And play the songs we made
They made me so
And I would love to see that day
Her day was mine

- Beirut

There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment.
-Sarah Dessen (The Truth about Forever)

Across the years I will walk with you -
in deep green forests; on shores of sand:
and when our time on earth is through,
in heaven, too, you will have my hand.
-Robert Sexton

... I'm not the silly romantic you think.
I don’t want the heavens or the shooting stars.
I don’t want gemstones or gold. I have those things already.
I want…a steady hand. A kind soul. I want to fall asleep, and wake, knowing my heart is safe. I want to love, and be loved.
- Shana Abé (writer)

Sexiness wears thin after a while and beauty fades, but to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, now that’s a real treat.
-Joanne Woodward (about her husband Paul Newman)

As the music at the banquet
As the wine before the meal
As the firelight in the night
So are you to me

As the ruby in the setting
As the fruit upon the tree
As the wind blows over the plains
So are you to me

As the wind blows over the plains
So are you to me
So are you to me

-Eastmountainsouth

It is a risk to love. What if it doesn't work out? Ah, but what if it does.

Merry Christmas...

Christmas is finally here. It's time for joy, family, friends, love and happiness. This has always been one of my favourite days of the year. Everybody's in good spirits and love just seems to surround everyone like warm blankets on a freezing night or a cool breeze on a hot summers day.

Here is wishing each and everyone a very merry and blessed Christmas. Spend it with the people in your life that you love and make you happy. Ho ho ho...

Lots of love.

Let me introduce you to Jennifer G... #40-42

#40
HAVE A GIRLS WEEKEND WITH MY SISTER

An older sister is a friend and defender - a listener, conspirator, a counsellor and a sharer of delights. And sorrows too.
-Pam Brown

I have a sister, let's call her Jennifer G, that is four years older than I am. That is quite a big age gap when you're growing up. She was a moody teenager for what pretty much feels like my whole childhood, while I was the bratty, annoying, blackmailing, irritating little sister...and man, was I good at it.

Luckily our relationship started to change once I left school, she got married, had a baby girl and I went to University...pretty much when I started growing up. Maybe the distance did us good?

I know some sisters who only see each other on Mother's Day and some who will never speak again. But most are like my sister and me... linked by volatile love, best friends who make other best friends ever so slightly less best.
-Patricia Volk

Today, my sister is one of my closest friends and confidants. I cherish the fact that I can tell her, ask or share anything without any fear of judgement, but still with the realisation that she will give me an honest opinion and advice, even though I might not want to hear it. We may not see each other as often as we like, but I know I can phone her up any time, day or night and she'll be there, no matter what. And isn't that the very definition of a sister? Somebody that will be there even though you might have screwed up or done something stupid...

To the outside world we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other's hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time.
-Clara Ortega

We recently had an amazing birth-day. She turned 30 and as a gift I gave her a day. A husband and kid-(even though I love my niece to bits)-free day, no obligations, no responsibilities, just us for the day...doing absolutely everything and nothing (when I told my Mom about my plans for our 'girly' day, her response was, "But I'm a girl too"). She didn't have to drive anywhere and we ended off the day in Camps Bay...with cocktails...

We are sisters. We will always be sisters. Our differences may never go away, but neither, for me, will our song.
- Elizabeth Fishel

Now I would love to extend our day to a weekend. Just the two of us...a weekend filled with conversations, quiet, sun, laughter and special moments.

...here's to you...

She is your mirror, shining back at you with a world of possibilities. She is your witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway. She is your partner in crime, your midnight companion, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark. She is your teacher, your defense attorney, your personal press agent, even your shrink. Some days, she's the reason you wish you were an only child.
-Barbara Alpert

SKYDIVE

I want to think again of dangerous and noble things.
I want to be light and frolicsome.
I want to be improbable, beautiful and afraid of nothing,
as though I had wings.
-Mary Oliver (Starlings in Winter)

Somebody is literally going to have to push me out of the plane. You think I'm kidding, I'm dead serious. But oh, how it must feel to be weightless, like you're really flying...

MEMORIZE MY TWO FAVOURITE POEMS

My two favourite poems are...

Obviously one is an E.E. Cummings poem :). Probably the most well known one. I first heard it in the movie In Her Shoes, when Cameron Diaz's character reads it at her sister's wedding at the end of the film.

i carry your heart with me

-ee cummings

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)

i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

I had a wonderful English teacher when I was at high school. One day, as an assignment, we had to study this poem. The task was to explain what you thought the person reading the note would feel upon seeing it. Now, 11 years later, this poem is still beautiful in its simplicity.

This is just to say
-William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast.

Forgive me
they were
so sweet
and so cold.

I came across another beautiful poem the other day while watching the new Levi advert on television. The first line, 'Your life is your life', and the final line of the poem, 'The gods wait to delight in you', makes me feel like anything is possible.

The Laughing Heart
-Charles Bukowski

Your life is your life.
Don't let it be dubbed into dank submission.
Be on the watch.
There are ways out.
There is a light somewhere.
It may not be much light but it beats
darkness.
Be on the watch.
The gods offer you chances.
Know them.
Take them.
You can't beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
And the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
Your life is your life.
Know life is your life.
Know it while you have it.
You are marvellous.
The gods wait to delight in you.

Keep you posted.

OWN SERENA VAN DER WOODSEN/BLAKE LIVELY'S WARDROBE

Yes, I watch Gossip Girl. Yes, I watch it because Chuck and Nate are pretty. And let’s be honest, who doesn't want to be part of Manhattan’s Upper East Side elite? You know you want to...

Serena Van Der Woodson, probably the most annoying character on television, but undoubtedly one with the best wardrobe. I mean come on, seriously? How fair can it be that one person has THIS amount of fabulous outfits (there are too many gorgeous ones, I'm just sharing a few). And I love Blake Lively’s style...she is definitely my beauty and fashion girl crush.

...those outfits...

...dressed up on set...

...casual Serena...

...casual Blake...

...Blake on the red carpet...

...and then just beautiful...

...and that hair...

...and that body...

Two words, people. I have just two words for you...Rachel wants :).

GO BACKPACKING THROUGH A FOREIGN COUNTRY

As the traveller who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate more lovingly, our own.
-Margaret Mead

I want to pack a bag, travel to a foreign country, I'm not particularly picky about which one, and work and travel from one town to the next. I think this must be one of the best ways to explore, living amongst the locals, learning and experiencing customs and broadening my horizons by discovering other cultures.

GO TO THE RIO CARNIVAL IN BRAZIL

One word people...colour :). It looks like magic, all the lights, sequins, glitter, feathers and of course the dancing...and the Brazilian boys...

GET A DOG

Dogs don't know about beginnings, and they don't speculate on matters that occurred before their time. Dogs also don't know - or at least don't accept - the concept of death. With no concept of beginnings or endings dogs probably don't know that for people having a dog as a life companion provides a streak of light between two eternities of darkness.
-Stanley Coren

I never had a dog growing up. It's not something I regret, I just think that having a dog, someone greeting you when you get home like they have not seen you for years, having another living being being dependant on you, it must be quite an experience. Just one look at those puppy eyes :).

I have a yen for a chocolate LabradorThey are my favourite breed and I like chocolate...viola :).
I think I'll call him...
